Due to Apple’s sorcery, the jump from 38 to 40 is not as pronounced as from 40 to 42. Explanations welcome. Because the 38mm is actually 38.6 mm tall and the 40 mm exactly 40mm tall. Likewise the 42mm is 42.5 mm tall and the 44 is exactly 44mm tall. To add to this, the 38 and 40 have similar widths whereas the 42/44 are substantially wider.

They sell it because it serves a purpose. It is price competitive with other fitness trackers like Fitbit so it gives a nice offramp for those customers to consider apple. I have been a Fitbit user for 5+ years and was considering the Charge 5. But that was $179 vs. the Charge 3 that I bought a few years ago at $149.
